Why July Is The Best Month To Sort Your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile is the single most important free tool a UK tradesman has. Here's how to get it working properly this month.
The Free Lead Source Most Trades Ignore
When a homeowner in your area types "plumber near me" or "roofer in [town]" into Google, the first thing that appears isn't a website — it's a map with three business listings on it. That map is Google's "Local Pack", and getting into it is worth more than any paid ad you'll ever run.
Google Business Profile (GBP) is what decides whether you show up there. And it's completely free.
Why July Specifically
July matters because you're actively working. Homeowners can see fresh reviews, recent photos, current opening hours — all signals Google uses to rank you higher. Sort GBP in a quiet month like January and you've got nothing to show. Sort it in July and you're feeding it real, recent proof that you're a busy, active trade.
The Setup Checklist
If you haven't touched your profile in months (or never claimed it), work through this in order:
- Claim your listing at google.com/business — takes 5 minutes
- Fill every field — services, service areas, opening hours, phone, website
- List every trade you offer — don't just say "builder", list extensions, kitchens, groundworks, etc.
- Add your service areas by town — every Cheshire village and town you cover, individually
- Upload 10+ real job photos from the last 3 months — Google massively favours recent images
Reviews: The Ranking Rocket Fuel
Google ranks profiles with recent, frequent reviews higher than profiles with more but older reviews. The trades winning locally are getting one or two new reviews every week, not 40 reviews from three years ago.
Every job you finish this July, do this:
1. Message the customer that evening. 2. Send them your direct Google review link (get it from your GBP dashboard). 3. Ask them to mention the town and the service in the review.
Ten reviews from ten different Cheshire towns beats fifty reviews with no locations mentioned. Google reads those reviews and uses them to decide where to rank you.
Weekly Posts Keep You Live
Most trades don't know GBP has a "Posts" feature — like mini social posts that appear right on your listing. Adding one per week signals to Google that the profile is actively maintained. A quick "Boiler service special this July across Northwich and surrounding areas" is enough.
What Happens When You Do This Properly
Trades that treat GBP seriously typically see:
- Direct calls from Google going up within 2–4 weeks
- More "how do I get to you" direction requests
- Higher ranking in "trade near me" searches
- A steady drip of leads that costs nothing per month
