How to Advertise a Trade Business in the UK Without Wasting Money

Vans, leaflets, Google, Facebook, lead sites — here's what's actually worth doing when you advertise a UK trade business.

Advertising Isn't One Thing

Most tradesmen think advertising means paying someone. It doesn't. For a UK trade business, advertising is simply making sure that when a local person needs your trade, you're the name they see and trust.

Here's the order we'd do it in, from free to paid.

Free: Google Business Profile

The single highest-return thing any UK trade business can do. Fill it in properly, add photos of real jobs, list each service separately, and collect reviews every week. Most local enquiries start here.

Free: Show The Work

Photos and thirty-second videos of jobs you're already doing. Before and after. A tidy finish. A tricky problem solved. Post it consistently and your name becomes familiar in your area — familiarity is what wins the quote.

Cheap: Your Van And Your Signage

Clean van, clear phone number, one line saying what you do and where. It's advertising you've already paid for. Make sure the website address on it goes to a page that actually loads well on a phone.

Cheap: Leaflets Done Properly

Leaflets still work for trades when they're local, seasonal and have one clear offer. Put a QR code on them pointing at a specific page so you know what came back.

Paid: Google Ads

Best for urgent, high-value work — emergency callouts, boiler repairs, EV chargers, roof leaks. Keep the radius tight and the services specific.

Paid: Lead Sites

Fine as a top-up. Just remember you're buying the same lead as three competitors and you own nothing at the end of it.

What Most Trades Get Wrong

They do a burst of everything for three weeks, get nothing, and stop. Advertising a trade business works on consistency — the same steady visibility, month after month, until you're the obvious local choice.

The Bottom Line

Fix your Google profile, show your work every week, collect reviews relentlessly, then add paid ads on your best-value services. That's it.
