Why Google Reviews Matter More Than Anything for Tradesmen
Google reviews are the single biggest local SEO signal for trades in 2026. Here's why — and exactly how to get more of them.
The Single Biggest Local Ranking Signal
If you only fix one thing about your online presence this year, make it your Google reviews. Google's local algorithm leans harder on review count, recency and quality than almost any other signal — especially for trades.
When a homeowner in Cheshire types "plumber near me", Google's map pack shows the three businesses it trusts most. Reviews are the main reason one business gets shown and the other gets buried.
What Google Actually Looks At
It's not just the star rating. Google weighs:
- How many reviews you have
- How recent they are (a review from last week beats one from 2022)
- Whether the reviewer mentions your trade and town — e.g. "plumber in Northwich"
- Photos attached to the review
- Your replies to every review, good and bad
A trade with 40 recent, detailed reviews will out-rank one with 200 old, one-line reviews. Every time.
What Reviews Do For Conversion
Even when Google doesn't put you top, reviews still win the job:
- 87% of UK homeowners read reviews before choosing a tradesman
- Anything under 4.5 stars loses around half its potential customers
- A page with 25+ reviews converts roughly 3x better than one with under 5
How To Actually Get More
The trades that win at reviews do these four things:
1. Ask every single happy customer — at handover, while they're smiling 2. Send a direct review link by text within 1 hour of finishing — they're hottest right then 3. Ask them to mention the trade and town — "if you could mention that we did your boiler in Knutsford that's a huge help" 4. Reply to every review within 48 hours — thank them by name and reference the job
Don't Be Scared Of The Odd Bad One
A page with 100% 5-star reviews actually looks fake. One 4-star with a polite, professional reply from you boosts trust more than another perfect score.
What To Do This Week
- Pull up your last 10 completed jobs
- Text every one of them your Google review link
- Reply to every existing review you've got, even old ones
That single afternoon of work will move your rankings within a month.
